Do I have
to trade in my stock hood?
- No! You
keep your stock hood. Removal and installation of the C5 hood is not
difficult for two people. Just remember to disconnect and remove the
pressurized shocks first, by prying back under the mounting clips.
Because you keep your stock hood, you and a buddy can replace it on your
car at any time. We recommend that you keep your stock hood intact,
inclusive of the under-hood liner and the lamp. Make sure to disconnect
the wire harness that goes to the lamp at the front of the car before
removing your hood.
Are these
hoods made from a GM hood?
- No! These
hoods are not re-constructed by bonding a hood scoop on to a GM hood.
These are new hoods constructed from carbon-fiber and carbon-fiber
reinforced fiberglass. We manufacture both the inner and outer hood
panels, and the inner panel is contoured to perfectly match the
underside of the outer panel.
Is there
any weight savings?
- Yes! A
factory hood without the liner, lamp, or hardware weighs in at about 35
pounds. The MotorCity hood tips the scale at about 24 pounds. You
attain a weight savings of over 10 pounds!
Do I have
to modify my car to make it fit?
- No! An
excellent fit is achieved by using just the original factory mounting
hardware. The factory hardware provides ample adjustability, and is
easily accessible. Very little adjustment, if any at all, is even
necessary.
How long
does it take to install?
- If you can
round up two people besides yourself, you can remove the stock hood and
all the mounting hardware in about 30 minutes. You can install the
hardware, mount and adjust the new MotorCity hood in about 45 minutes.
Is the hood
design functional?
-
Absolutely! Besides the weight savings of over 10 pounds, and the
aesthetically pleasing and aggressive looks, the following performance
statistics are now documented.
Tests were
conducted after a chassis dyno setup. Actual quarter mile times
recorded both with the factory hood installed, then with the MotorCity
hood installed, all other factors remaining the same. The testing was
performed both with and without nitrous-oxide. Several runs were made
to insure consistency.
Results
(best quarter-mile times):
Stock hood,
no nitrous: 13.47 et
MotorCity
Hood, no nitrous: 13.41 et
Stock hood,
with nitrous: 12.08 et
MotorCity
Hood, with nitrous: 11.97 et
Conclusion:
On a twelve second car, quarter mile time was reduced by 1/10 second.
The faster the car, the better the hood works.
The tests
performed were independent and impartial. We will let the results speak
for themselves.
- Yes, the
MotorCity hood vents underhood heat.
The hood is
vented on the top. Where does the water go?
- Any water
that finds its way down the vent falls harmlessly in front of the engine
to the pavement.
How much
does it cost to get it painted?
- Prices
vary. However we can present some guidelines. Because of the Class A
finish on the hood as it is delivered from the factory, very little prep
time prior to painting is required. However, some new colors take more
expertise to match. Offered as a guideline, approximately 5 to 8 hours
labor can be expected which includes painting the underside, plus
materials.
- You could
expect to pay on the low side around $400.00 to the high side of around
$600.00, again depending on many variables.
Should I
paint the underside of the hood?
- This is a
matter of personal preference. The underside frame is black gelcoat
from the factory. The backside of the hood itself is a 2x2 twill weave
solid carbon fiber, which has a matte finish. We highly recommend that
the underside of the hood be clear-coated. This will add gloss, depth,
and lustre to the carbon fiber and will also make it easier to keep
clean. Call for tech support.
- Prior to
the clear coat, the carbon fiber areas can be masked off and the hood
frame may be painted body color, if desired.
What about
the under hood liner/insulator?
- We suggest
that you leave it intact on your stock hood when you remove it. It is
not required on the MotorCity hood. It would cover up the beauty of the
carbon fiber!
What about
the under hood lamp?
- We suggest
that you leave it intact on your stock hood when you remove it. If
desired, we have new GM lamps available with the full wire harness for
under $30.00. These can be attached directly to the MotorCity hood in
the factory location with the screws provided.
The hoods
are vacuum bag molded. What is vacuum bag molding?
- Vacuum
bagging is a form of compression molding which utilizes atmospheric
pressure to compress the resin into the fibers of the carbon weave,
which allows for full saturation of the carbon fiber by the resin, and
also provides a relatively smooth underside finish. In the same
process, all the excess resin which is not compressed into the carbon
fiber is removed, allowing just the resin that is necessary to remain.
This achieves a very desirable high fiber-to-resin ratio, not achievable
under conventional hand laminating methods, which can almost double the
relative laminate strength.
Why did you
choose vacuum bag molding? It sounds expensive.
- Vacuum bag
molding is considerably more expensive than hand laid fiberglass, but
the physical properties achieved are much higher, and the high
performance cars are more demanding. We are bringing a modern molding
technology to the Corvette market that was formerly just not available.
We are offering a part that is worthy of the car. Molding methods of
this type are used in both Indy Car Racing and the Aerospace industry.
